Orangutan Island

Animal Planet's new show, "Orangutan Island," is a must-see for anyone who has enjoyed "Meerkat Manor." The new orangutan show focuses on the lives and social culture of a group of orphaned orangutans as they learn to live in the wild in a protected sanctuary in Borneo.

With illegal logging operations destroying the native habitat of orangutans in Borneo, hundreds of baby orangutans have been left orphaned and homeless. The show "Orangutan Island" will allow viewers to watch as these baby orangs learn to live together in a social community, develop attachments with other orangutans, and discover how to survive together.

The Orangutan Island community provides a different sort of culture for these baby orangutans than they would experience on their own in the wild. Wild orangutans live mostly on their own and travel and explore extensively across large areas. The primates on Orangutan Island, in contrast, are confined to a relatively small island, and must learn to live together in a social community. This radical departure from their normal living conditions is necessary if these highly intelligent primates are to survive and thrive.
