Orangutan Island is actually an island called Palas 2, right next door to Palas 1, where Hamlet came from. Palas 2 is in the Rungen River in Borneo, northwest of Autralia. Only about 100 acres in total area, the island is one of several small islands used for orangutan rescue and survival. These islands are large enough for habitation by as many as 50 orangutans each, although in the wild the orangutans would not form such large groups, and they would be spread out over a much larger area.

The Nyaru Menteng group acquires uninhabited islands for orangutan rehabilitation, usually through arrangements with the nearby mainland owners. Each island is chosen only after careful study to determine how suitable it will be for the orangutans — taking into consideration safety and security, food supply water supply, annual rainfall and other factors.
