The Orangutan Island Series on Animal Planet

The Orangutan Island television show premiered on Nov. 2, 2007. It follows a group of 35 young orangutans rescued from the black market, or from almost certain death in the wild after their mothers were killed. The orangutans are classmates of Forest School 103 at the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.

The orangutan rescue project, led by Lone Droscher-Nielsen, worked with the orangutans to teach them the skills they will need to survive — from foraging for food to evading predators.
